Birmingham Cross Country League (2nd fixture) – West Bromwich

The men’s senior team kept up their push for promotion at Aston University despite missing both the Kellie brothers. The team finished fifth on the day, leaving them in third place by a margin of 52 points over Newcastle. Two further solid performances should see them finishing in one of the three promotion spots. Warwick University again dominated the race with Gloucester’s first finisher Mark Ingram in 20th place.

The B team again won their category, extending the club’s lead in the quest for the B team trophy.

Birmingham Cross Country League (1st fixture) - Senneleys Park

The men’s team got off to a flying start finishing in second place at Senneleys Park behind a strong Warwick University team led off by race winner, British Junior international Tom Sharland. Peter Kellie was Gloucester’s highest finisher in third place in 38:49, followed by Simon Kellie in 13th position in 41:43. The club were pleased with how high up the field their next four scorers were Mark Ingram 21st (43:29), Peter Lloyd 26th (43:58), Luke Herbert 31st(44:19) and Jeremy Mower 32nd (44:23).

This gave them a total of 124, their best score since 2001.

The B team comprised of Phil Hanson in 48th (46:31), Ian Summers 58th (47:27), Keith Short 65th (48:36), Arthur Daley 67th (48:38), Neil Scowby 85th (50:29) and Peter Godwin 93rd (52:04). This gave the B team a total of 416 points, finishing first B team by a huge margin of 140 points.

The club’s other finishers were Paul Nash 96th (52:24), Dave Gresswell 99th (52:28), Arnold Yeomans 105th (53.37) and Andy McKenzie 13th (67:59).

19 year old Richard Davenport who broke the British junior 400m hurdles record at the World Junior Championships won the junior male prize at the British Athletics Writers' Association annual dinner.

IAAF World Junior Championships

Richard Davenport (Gloucester AC) broke a UK National Junior record that was older than him at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy, on Thursday 15 July.

When 18-year-old Davenport stood on the scorching start line for his 400m hurdles semi-final, he was not even aware that the UK Under 20 400m hurdles record had stood at 50.22 seconds to Martin Briggs since 1983. All he knew was that he was going to treat this race as his final.

But the omens were not great. “I had a technically deficient warm-up,” he said afterwards – an eloquent description of the way he smashed the hurdle he tried to clear. Sensibly, though, he rested as long as he could and then went over it again to settle himself.

The race is best described by the young man himself: “My hurdling was rubbish. I must have hit six [hurdles] and I was too close to four. But the track and the people around you just make you run fast.”

Did he realise he had run as fast as 50.20 seconds? “No way!” he laughed. “I am surprised.” 50.20 seconds obliterates the previous PB of 51.08 which he ran in his first round heat barely 30 hours earlier. It also earned him second place in the race behind Ibrahim Al-Hamaidi (Saudia Arabia), who ran a PB of 49.55 seconds. And it made Davenport the fifth-fastest qualifier for the final he never expected to reach.

“I’ll be happy with eighth in the final,” he said. “It’s a bonus.”

Asked what it means to be among the leading eight in the world, he came up with: “It means I have to delay my junk food for a day – the Pringles and Cadburys will have to wait.” His final is Friday evening.

IAAF World Junior Championships

AAA 400m hurdles Under 20 Champion Richard Davenport (Gloucester AC) ran a personal best time of 51.08 seconds in his first round heat at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy, on Wednesday morning 14 July.

It earned him second place in his race – behind Kerron Clement (USA), breezed home in 50.10 seconds – and a spot in the semi-finals.

And Davenport said: “I felt there is more in there. It was just a case of getting through. I let the American guy go because I knew he has a faster time than me. With 180m to go, I made sure there was no-one pushing on me. I took the bend easy. Two guys came up to me so I moved away from them. Now, the semi-final will be my final because there are some seriously swift guys here.”
